The Akashic records are a compilation of all universal events, thoughts, words, emotions, and intent ever to have occurred in the past, present, or future in terms of all entities and life forms, not just human.  People choose to have their records read for a variety of reasons.  They may have a curiosity about a past life, why certain patterns keep emerging in their life and to seek healing to name a few.
